The magnolias bloomed as soon as the sun
stayed out long enough to play soccer games
in my backyard after dinner. The green and
white polka dotted painting signified a sure
boundary. Past the trunk was clearly out.
A ball in the tree was playable if it fell down
after reasonable shaking. A ball in the creek
was also out. It was a serious game. Winning
meant bragging rights and the other kids
knowing you were strong, a necessary part
of the field just like the giant magnolia tree.
